Any aircraft where you can call flames coming from the engine a “design feature” is fantastic.

Despite my adoration for trijets, my #1 remains the Comet.
Connie’s definitely in the top 10.

I could accept this statement for passenger aircraft but there are pretty nice looking single-seaters too.
For example Macchi M.C 72. It looks very sleek and fast but the truth is that it was actually extremely fast. It was initially built for Schneider Cup race in mind but it didn’t participate. Instead it made speed records.
It was the fastest aircraft in the world from 1933 to 1939 and it still holds the record for piston powered seaplanes with an official record of 709.2 km/h (382.9 kn or 440.7 mph). This truly fast as Hughes H-1 Racer achieved only 567.12 km/h in a record attempt ~1 year later than Macchi’s record took place.
Rather surprisingly the record plane still exists in pristine condition in a museum in Italy.
